Tips for Back-to-School Auto Maintenance

School has started for most, which means your schedule is likely crammed with events and activities. However, back-to-school auto maintenance should also be a priority this time of year. The fall is the right time to schedule regular service like oil changes, inspections, and more.

According to Allstate, the first thing you should do this fall is get an oil change. Most cars need an oil change roughly four times a year (3,000 miles or three months), which means fall is the perfect time to bring your car in. You can also check and top off fluid levels, including coolant, oil, transmission fluid, brake and power steering fluid, and washer fluid.

Next, check the tires. Tire pressure decreases in cold weather, which is usually right around the corner by the time school starts. Air pressure decreases at about 1 psi for every 10-degree dip in temperature. This can also cause added wear on the tread—another thing to check. You can test tire tread using the penny test. Simply flip a penny upside down and place it in the middle of the tread. If you see above President Lincoln’s head, it’s probably time for new tires.

Finally, check your lights. This time of year is often darker than early summer, which means it can be hard to see. Plus, the school year brings added pedestrians to sidewalks and cross walks. Have someone help you test your lights to see if they’re all on (including brake and reverse lights).

2017 Chevrolet Bolt Safety

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt is an all-electric vehicle known for its impressive 238-mile range. The popular electric model has earned a reputation for comfort and reliability. Now Chevrolet can add safety to the list. The Chevrolet Bolt recently earned the Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

According to the IIHS, the Chevrolet Bolt is the first all-electric vehicle to earn the honor. The Bolt scored a top “Good” rating in all five crash tests. Its advanced safety technologies brought it even closer to the top score with a “Superior” rating.

The active safety technologies helped the Chevrolet Bolt stop and avoid collisions as both 12 mph and 25 mph.

The only thing that stopped the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt from achieving the highest Top Safety Pick+ rating was its headlights. While many vehicles feature headlights that are generally rated as too dim, the Chevrolet Bolt’s headlights were the exact opposite. Its headlights were so bright that they could cause glare for oncoming drivers.

Had the Chevrolet Bolt dimmed the headlights a little, it would have earned the Top Safety Pick+ rating with ease.

What’s up in Rolla?

Now that October’s over, it can seem like all the Halloween festivities have been tossed out the window and now everyone is waiting eagerly for Christmas. As a result, November can seem a little boring. However, if you know where to look, plenty of local November events are happening right here in Rolla, so you and the family don’t have to get cabin fever waiting for Thanksgiving and beyond.

First of all, if you’re into theater, why not check out the showing of “Black Comedy” at the Ozark Actors Theatre? With love on the line and humorous misunderstandings galore, you’re sure to have a good time. Various showings will be available throughout the month.

If you’re more of an athletic type or even just want to honor our veterans, the Honoring Our Heroes Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 5K offers participants of various skill levels the ability to get out for a brisk morning walk, run, or jog to raise money for our vets on November 19th.

November 24th is, of course, Thanksgiving, which means the Galloping Gobbler – another marathon – is happening in Rolla that morning.

Following shortly after, on the 28th, you can stay up late for the Observatory’s Public Viewing Night, allowing visitors to stargaze at the Orion Nebula.
